Ishiguro either writes the most interesting ideas, or the most regular ones in the most interesting way. This book features Kathy, a woman in her thirties, as we look back with her on her life and her friends at Halisham, the boarding school she attended. I went into this completely clueless and the surprise was the best element. Never Let Me go combines many genres, and it weaves together a plot of dystopia and coming of age and speculative fiction. It also manages to be slow, and powerful, and heart wrenching. I was engulfed by this nostalgic atmosphere and the last pages were especially moving. The novel left me in a sense of awe, and unique profoundness. The book explores what it’s like to be different, the meaning of being human, fate and how we control it, and the fearful future that humanity might come to. It is also about the intimateness, confusion, and complexity of relationships. The writing is brilliant, structured in layers and layers with articulate details and suspense embellishing them. The little shots of emotions add up to create a surge that creeps up on you. It’s literal proof of “it’s not about the plot, it’s about the execution.”
