"A love story entwined with a powerful indictment of racism's insidiousness."

Things that stood out to me about this novel: 1. That exactly 50 years after it was written, Fonny's is still the lived experience of millions of black men in America who are scapegoated and targeted by the criminal justice system. 2. Few people distill so beautifully the force of attraction and the feeling of falling in love as Baldwin. 3. Sharon would be who I call in a crisis, her character just radiated strength, calm, warmth, and integrity. 4. Baldwin goes heavy on misogyny throughout which is disappointing, with the author rarely missing a chance to trash most of the female characters' looks and motives. Though this wasn't my favourite work of Baldwin's I still was very glad to have read it. The prose was beautiful and it will leave you with a lot to think about.
