"A story of ambition and the american dream, west was a short and really interesting read!"

bellman, a widowed mule breeder, sets off to the undiscovered american west to find enormous animal bones he saw talked about in the papers. he leaves behind his ten year old daughter bess with her aunt julia, and the farm keep elmer jackson. this is a journey bellman will not return from, but that many others will grow from. the central plot is the bones, which are never discovered. but they are what keep bellman going - in the tradition of the ‘great american novel’ (though this is not an american novel), the bones are bellman’s ambition, his grasping for the american dream, just like the green light is gatsby’s ambition. it’s a futile endeavor but one that speaks of the courage and curiosity of this man. this is also a novel about a young girl, bess, coming of age alone, in a world that does not yet support young girls. she must now grow and harden herself. this has a sort of non-chronological structure and a very loose narrative flow which drifts from one character to another as seamlessly as a stream becomes a river. the plot is meandering and though there are no great moments of drama it’s tense and endearing and i really enjoyed reading this. i wouldn’t say it’s a favorite of mine, nor would i necessarily re-read it, but i do find that it’s a very refreshing and welcome modern take on ‘the great american novel’ and stories about the american dream, which i love 🤍

When Cy Bellman, American settler and widowed father of Bess, reads in the newspaper that huge ancient bones have been discovered in a Kentucky swamp, he leaves his small Pennsylvania farm and young daughter to find out if the rumours are true: that the giant monsters are still alive, and roam the uncharted wilderness beyond the Mississippi River. West is the story of Bellman's journey and of Bess, waiting at home for her father to return. Written with compassionate tenderness and magical thinking, it explores the courage of conviction, the transformative power of grief, the desire for knowledge and the pull of home, from an exceptionally talented and original British writer. It is a radiant and timeless epic-in-miniature, an eerie, electric monument to possibility.
