"An unexpected jewel of a novel, I really wished it had been 10x longer."

I was skeptical of this book, mostly because of the ugly cover art and a title that kept making me think of "Frexit" the media's term for the French far right's threat to secede from the EU. But this novel was a fantastic surprise. From the first chapter you are captivated by the main characters. The story centres on a rich, and wildly eccentric mother-son pair who are in the process of losing all their money and decide to go to France. The narrator takes us back and forth in time, slowly and elegantly revealing details of each characters past. The dialogue is very clever, the events get more and more peculiar, and an ever larger cast of lovable misfits assembles around the protagonists. You'll be done with it in a day both because it's short (too short!) and because you will be hooked.

Frances Price - tart widow, possessive mother and Upper East Side force of nature - is in dire straits, beset by scandal. Her adult son Malcolm is no help, mired in a permanent state of arrested development. And then there's their cat, Small Frank, who Frances believes houses the spirit of her late husband, an infamously immoral lawyer whose gruesome tabloid death rendered them social outcasts. To put their troubles behind them, the trio cut their losses and head for the exit. Their beloved Paris becomes the backdrop for a giddy drive to self-destruction, helped along by a cast of singularly curious characters: a bashful private investigator, an aimless psychic and Mme. Reynard, friendly American expat and aggressive houseguest. Brimming with pathos, warmth and wit, French Exit is a one-of-a-kind tragedy of manners, a riotous send-up of high society and a moving story of mothers and sons.
